Friends with Money

Friends with Money came on TV last night.  I had been wanting to see it (I like Catherine Keener and am a little smitten with Jennifer Aniston.  I mean, come on, who isn’t?) so I watched it all the way through.

It’s telling that this is the first review where I felt compelled to add an “indie” tag.  It’s just one of those movies, you know?  It’s funny at parts (not that funny) and sad at parts (never too sad) but mostly it’s just kind of an ambling portrait of marriage and relationships and life for women in Los Angeles.

Great.

This was just what I needed, w/d Nicole Holofcener: a movie starring gorgeous people who are married to rich guys to remind me that I’m the Olivia character (Aniston) – the single, broke, loser pot head with a dead end job and no self-respect.  Also, please don’t let me see Olivia as anything but depressed and unfulfilled until she has a nice boyfriend.*  Pretty please?  I really love to hate my life at the end of one of the few movies that gets made and distributed and has stars in it that is written and directed by a woman.  Thanks a lot, Nicole.  You’re the best.  You’re doing a real service to women everywhere who want to write and direct movies about how shitty their lives are because they’re women and we have it sooooo tough and boys are mean to us.  Pout.

ARGH!  The more I think about it, the more I loathe this movie.

*SPOILER ALERT: I know that Catherine Keener ends up uncoupled – but the reason is that she acts like a totally annoying chick!  Also, she and her husband are screenwriters.  Oriiiiginaaal!  For a movie about women, helmed by a woman, there is very little redeeming womanhood to be found in this movie.  Yep, Hookers, Victims & Doormats, all of them.
