Eisenberg plays James Brennan who comes home to live with his parents after he graduates from Oberlin. With a liberal arts degree (hey, I’ve got one of those!) he find himself either under or overqualified for anything that might resemble gainful employment and ends up getting a job at the local eponymous carnival. Rather than zany, the cast of characters James encounters at Adventureland are for the most part morose and malcontent. He quickly befriends his coworker, Joel (Martin Starr) who has a degree in Russian literature and develops an immediate crush on Em (Kristin Stewart), a beautiful, sharp and troubled NYU student who took a job at the carnival to escape a tumultuous home life.

Upon reflection, these characters are easy to peg, but the way the story develops wasn’t what I expected and I found it moving in a way that the vast majority of movies, whether they are meant to target me as a demographic, are not. The summer progresses typically, the carnys (sp?) falling in and out of love, drinking excessively, smoking a lot of marijuana and generally just trying to figure out life. Oh god, I think I have been pandered to.

SNL’s Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig are hilarious as the couple that runs the carnival. Their straightfaced enthusiasm and confusion is priceless. Martin Starr, who was unknown to me before, was also notable in his performance as the geeky but sweet friend and Matt Bush as the asshole friend leftover from grade school was iconically funny. If this movie were to see the same kind of success as something like Napoleon Dynamite (I’m sure it won’t, though I would be shocked to learn the comparison wasn’t tossed around at any point) then it would be Bush’s ball punching, sweatband wearing Tommy Frigo that people would undoubtedly latch on to.

I was planning on including a paragraph here about how the female characters were all somewhat detestable, but that really wasn’t the case, I think I just want it to be. Actually, Em is probably the most complex character in the film and even though she does make poor choices and behave irrationally at moments, that is easily attributable to the fact that she is human, not that she is a woman. This can often be a problem with feminist theorizing: it can backfire and have you (me) end up demonizing women instead of…you know, not doing that which is the whole point.

There were points where I felt like Adventureland was trying a little too hard and the peripheral characters were a little cliche, from Ryan Reynolds’ philandering maintenance man to Lisa P, the super-hot chick who is also super-Christian but there was something truthful and flawed about the way that James and Em negotiate their summer and each other that is touching and sweet. The poster and the trailer are very misleading — this isn’t a zany summer stoner comedy, though there are moments of that. It’s much more angsty and dark than that, but that’s a good thing.

Let the Right One In is one of those movies that just kind of comes out of nowhere. As a matter of fact, I had heard nothing of it until I started following awards season buzz and the Internet was all atwitter. So I went in not knowing much about it except for the dreaded prophecy that “It’s supposed to be SO good.” Oh no.

Oskar (Kåre Hedebrant) is a 12 year old boy living in what seems to be the projects of a cold and dreary Swedish town (are there Swedish towns that are not like this?). For some reason, despite his small stature and oh-so-flattering white blonde Dutch boy hair, he is bullied by the other boys in his class and, because he has no father figure in his life, can’t bring himself to stand up to them. One cold and dreary evening in the courtyard of his horribly depressing apartment complex, he meets the beautiful but strange Eli (Lena Leandersson) and they form a tenative friendship.

Meanwhile, their sleepy (and cold and dreary) town is falling victim to a rash of inexplicable murders in which the victims are suspended upside down and their blood drained. Oskar is morbidly fascinated by this turn of events – until he realizes that Eli is causing them because she is, in fact, a vampire.

The unfortunate thing about this movie seems to be that there are two films here that appeal to different sensibilities. First, the element of two innocent children who are on the fringes of society developing a bond of trust and friendship and experiencing tenative intimacy. The second is a gruesome vampire story with attack scenes that verge on cartoonish in their use of CGI and buckets of blood. Though the movie is very pretty, it’s hard to not be taken out of the story and forget your admiration for the velvety cool colors and the wide-eyed beauty of the littlest vampire when someone is being attacked by computer generated cats. I think less ambition in terms of the violence could have served the film well, though overall it was very well done and genuinely creepy.

The much delayed ensemble romantic comedy He’s Just Not That Into You, based on the book of the same name that has been dog-eared by cat-owning women across the world, is finally coming out February 6th. The poster went online today. Hmm…I wonder what this movie is going to be like…

Check it out, after the jump.

I don’t know, do you think maybe some attractive people are going to fall in and out of love and learn some life lessons along the way? I DON’T KNOW, WHAT DO YOU THINK??

I understand that they want people to get what kind of movie it is, but for all the millions of dollars spent on movie marketing they can’t get any better than a photo collage that a 5th grader could decoupage on foamboard? Yawn.

At least this one is a little creative:

All that being said, if He’s Just Not That Into Her, why does everyone look so damn happy?

Casino Royale is a divisive Bond film. There are a lot of young people like me who didn’t know anyone but Pierce Brosnan as Bond and never really got excited about the genre that he defined. For these people, Casino Royale and the First Blonde Bond marked an exciting change and made a new, if tentative, Bond fan. Casino Royale took popular elements of badassitude that sprung from lucrative places like the Bourne franchise and applied them to an old character. It also humanized Bond in way that was rare in past films. He allowed himself to care, to fall in love and ultimately to be hurt. This appeals to a modern audience that wants to relate to their heros on a deeper level. Superman is OK — but his popularity with today’s youth reached new heights only when they were allowed to see him as a gawky teenager on Smallville. The X-Men trilogy was hugely successful because anyone could be a mutant. I’m not breaking any new ground with these assessments, but I think that’s why Casino Royale resonated with a new Bond audience, myself included. The only part that I deeply disliked about Casino Royale was Eva Green as Vesper. How could *that* be the girl that Bond falls in love with? Her voice makes my teeth grate. Smoky deepness like ScarJo is one thing. Sounding like you’re 2 Marlboro Reds from a tracheotomy is something else. I also found her acting to be wooden and obnoxious and generally unlikable. But lucky for her, this isn’t a review of Casino Royale.

Quantum of Solace takes the Bond character that so many people were drawn to in Casino Royale and lets him keep being awesome without going soft. He’s learned his lesson now, and even better — he’s out for revenge. This time around, Bond wants the truth about his dead lover and will stop at nothing to get it! YES!

Unfortunately, some bad guys get in the way. The movie falls right in line with so many recent films and even albums that have been trying their best to cash in on the ubiquitous “greening” of everything. Yes, in 2008, the bond villains are eco-terrorists with a head honcho, one Dominic Greene (Eco-terrorist named Greene? No Comment.) played by the surprisingly short, but still somehow appealing Mathieu Amalric (who is also great at playing a guy who can only blink to communicate). While Bond tracks down Greene, has a tryst with a tall redhead, tries to get to the bottom of what happened with Vesper and constantly runs afoul of M., he also keeps encountering the luscious and exotic Camille Montes (Olga Kurylenko, who had a scene stealing cameo in Max Payne, which I actually saw). At first, he thinks he has rescued her from the grips of a deposed Bolivian dictator, but then he learns that she is on her own mission of revenge and doesn’t need rescuing at all (Ok, maybe a tiiiiiny bit of rescuing). YES, YES, YES!

With thrilling, well shot action sequences, steely, compelling performances and an interesting if not entirely awesome plot, Quantum of Solace won’t make you fall in love with James Bond all over again. But it’s OK, because you’re already seduced from before.

And no, for the record, they never explain what the fuck the title is supposed to mean and yes, I think it’s a shitty title.

This is none of those movies.

Charlie Bartlett was supposed to come out last summer but it didn’t. I’m not sure if it had anything to do with Virginia Tech, but maybe because of like psychoactive drugs and suicidal teenagers, they wanted to wait. Or maybe it was retooled or something. Who knows (OK, someone knows, but I’m not doing an investigation or something, I’m just trying to tell you about this awful movie). But now that it’s out – I hope it goes away really soon.

Charlie Bartlett (Anton Yelchin) gets kicked out of a bunch of private schools (a la Igby) so he moves home with his overly-medicated mom (Hope Davis) who is a single parent (Igby, Rushmore) and goes to public school (Rushmore). Though he doesn’t fit in at first (Rushmore), he slowly wins everyone with psychotherapy in the boys room and psychiatric medications over until he rules the school (Rushmore, Bueller). He also falls in love with Susan (Kat Dennings, the buxom daughter from 40 Year Old Virgin) who happens to be the principal’s (Robert Downey Jr.) daughter (kind of Bueller). There is some debacle with cameras in the student lounge and blah blah blah Charlie teaches everyone to love themselves, even the suicidal kid who OD’s on the drugs that he sold him: turns out he really just wanted someone to read his play! (Rushmore!)

How many ways are there for one movie to suck? Besides being completely derivative of a few really great movies, Charlie Bartlett is really horribly written. Really. Bad. The plot is so trite and predictable. Anton Yelchin cannot carry a movie. Robert Downey Jr. can’t save a movie (ok, maybe Only You – adorable! What is Marissa Tomei up to anyway? Hopefully something better than this.) Kat Dennings can’t be the hot girl (I’m really sorry, but all she has is one expression, two volumes and a huge rack.)

They literally put on a play about teen angst at the end of the movie. Written by the suicidal kid. Wherein Susan sings and it makes her dad cry because like a few minutes before he was like “I miss hearing you sing.” Oh, he’s also an alcoholic and there is a scene right before the play where he is waving a gun around drunk. This just made me think of that awesome quote that RDJ gave at one of his drug hearings or something where he said “It’s like I’ve got a shotgun in my mouth with my finger on the trigger and I like the taste of the gun metal.”

I think I might watch Rushmore or Igby Goes Down to get the taste of this movie out of my mouth. Then I’ll find a shotgun for writer Gustin Nash (1. What the hell kind of name is that?? 2. IMDb says he wrote another movie called “Youth in Revolt” that has been announced. Which movie that I love is he going to rip off horribly this time? Rebel Without a Cause? Jesus.)

So fool’s gold the thing is like a glittery rock that tricks idiots into thinking it’s actual gold. Fool’s Gold the movie has sexy fun posters, the presence of two hot and OK actors (Kate Hudson and Matthew McCona…MacConna…Mc…who gives a shit, just take off your shirt) who were pretty cute together in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and at least one good actor (Donald Sutherland) and tricks idiots (e.g., me) into thinking it might be a cute and fun movie.

Uh.

Not so much.

Holy shit, does Fool’s Gold blow. It is, honestly, one of the most poorly written movies I have ever ever seen. The opening sequence did live up to the fun beach romp with hot bod McC. But that was because no one talked during the first 3 minutes – there was just a fun Carribean soundtrack, some mishaps, and Theo from The Cosby Show drinking a beer. Cool, right?

It was downhill and in need of a runaway truck ramp from there. The story was retarded: Some lame/unrealistic divorce scene – but oh my god they totally don’t really want to get divorced because they are totally still in love they just both have lessons to learn – and then some totally lame treasure hunting story and then everyone is on Donald Sutherland’s huge boat and Kate and Matt convince him and his Paris Hiltonesque (but brunette) daughter (it’s worth mentioning that this chick is really good at being really annoying) to go looking for some retarded treasure only once they get there, Matt McC’s mentor is already there looking for the treasure on the tip of a scary rap star (BigBunny?) that got the tip from Matt before he sunk his boat and tried to drown him. Do they find the treasure? Do they get back together? Does everyone learn important lessons about themselves and what really matters in life? For their sake, I hope so, but I wouldn’t know because I couldn’t sit through another second of that POS so you’ll have to find out on your own. Or just like, go drink a cocktail of seawater and bad shellfish because that would probably actually be more fun.

Name a Woody Allen crime/punishment/guilt/searching for God thriller that would barely be worth $6.50 somewhere in Iowa, much less $14 at the Arclight in Hollywood:
Cassandra’s Dream

Which is more fun to watch, Colin Farrell as the bright spot in Cassandra’s Dream or Colin Farrell fucking a model on that sex tape?
Trick question! They are both fun to watch in their own way.

Name a woman who is hot and great to see starring in a Woody Allen movie because she’s very womanly (see: a plenty, curves) but still portrayed as “the hot girl” but is not really much of an actress:
Hayley Atwell (you get partial credit for Scarlett Johansson, but the ‘great to see starring in a Woody Allen movie’ part of the question would be wrong wrong wrong.)

Who likes the poster anyway and is going to keep going to see Woody Allen movies as long as they don’t star ScarJo or someone else that I find patently offensive because she loves Annie Hall and Manhattan more than every other movie combined?
It’s me. The sad answer for that one is ME.

I really miss the days when it was totally acceptable for someone who looked like Dexter Fletcher (nice name!) to be the romantic lead opposite Ione Skye at the peak of her hotness. Actually, no, I don’t. But such was the world in 1989 and it was this world that brought us The Rachel Papers and what amounts to a lot of misogyny, not nearly enough Jonathan Pryce, a few jokes and Ione Skye’s tits (nice rack!).

In 80s teen movie fashion, British guy Charles (Fletcher) lives in London, has a computer and wants to get laid. He meets Rachel (Skye) and decides he MUST have her. So he employs all sorts of tricks, including keeping info on her in a database (creep!), and finally wins her over. Then they have tons and tons of sex. Then they decide that she should come to stay at the house that he shares with his sister and her crazy husband (Pryce!). But, despite the really unnecessary amounts of fucking, he gets sick of her. Read that again. HE gets sick of HER. After all the time he spent (dirty) spreadsheeting her and wooing her away from James Spader (Oh, did I not mention that? I thought ’1989′ implied that James Spader was involved in some nefarious way), he gets sick of her because she’s always horny and expects him not to fuck other girls. GO FIGURE. So he cheats on her. And she finds out because she comes over to fuck his brains out and is like “Oh, get a condom” and he says he’s out and she says “No, you’re not, I just saw them this morning” and THEN HE TRIES TO FUCK HER WITH A USED CONDOM. Ew. Ew. Ew. Ew.

She dumps him. She moves to New York. They go to a museum a while later (as friends) where she wears a hideous pantsuit and, I guess he learned his lesson?

I know I learned mine: Don’t ever be hornier than the guy you’re fucking. Because he’ll cheat on you.

Wait, what?

But seriously, Global Warming Is A Serious Issue And We Should All Curb Our Carbon Emissions, Etc.

This movie had a lot of really nice graphics and was very informative and educational but Al Gore’s even-keeled southern drawl put me right to sleep.

Also, I wrote a paper about this subject in 7th grade and no one gave me an Oscar.

But look how broodingly sexy Al Gore was back in the day:
